Kirk's having persistent nightmares about the destruction of Vulcan. After trying and failing to get him to accept some kind of treatment, McCoy finally goes to Spock for help. This is a big deal because he assumes, from what little Jim has told him about the mind meld, that the other Kirk and Spock were lovers, and that McCoy in this life is going to be left behind any day now.

So Spock melds with Kirk (I'd rather not have him remove any memories, maybe simply sharing the grief helps or something?) and learns that he's in love with McCoy. But he's freaked out by the fact that Kirk Prime died young(ish) and alone, and thinks that if that Kirk with his stable family background and years of experience prior to becoming captain couldn't make it work, there's no chance he'll be able to now.

Spock gets them in a room together and declares that they're both being idiots. But, you know, Vulcanly. Maybe he even gets Spock Prime on the comm or something to back him up.
